Fireplace Insert

The National Fireplace Institute requires that all fireplace inserts (unless otherwise specifically listed) be installed with a stainless steel connector from the fireplace insert to the first flue liner. The following minimum conditions are also required:

  1. The cross sectional area of the flue can be no greater than three times that of the flue collar or smoke outlet on the insert.
  2. Inspection and cleaning must be possible.
  3. No dilution air is allowed to enter the chimney.

Inspection and cleaning are difficult even when following regulations for this method. When possible, it is advisable to install an airtight cleanout door to the rear of the smoke shelf. Sealing out dilution air is difficult. An acceptable method of installation to eliminate dilution air is to seal the damper area or throat area of the chimney around the chimney connector. Such a seal must be removable and replaceable for the cleaning and re-installation. Sealing it against the face is also acceptable but more difficult to achieve effectively. All of these problems are solved with Full Relining.
